Tamarinds, Kale, Cabbage, Okra, Corn these are plants that Zambia also grows on a large scale.
The question is are we growing enough to export.
That question was one which kept popping up in mind at the just ended Fruit Logistica.
A fresh food and Vegetable fair that saw 60,000 trade visitors from 140 countries.
China is one of the largest distributors of Tamarinds globally.
The tree grows in areas with an altitude of 0-1500 m, 350-1500 mm annual rainfall and well drained deep alluvial soils (Salim et al, 1998).
Zambia needs to find a way to export tamarinds but this requires finding ways to increase shelf life and reduce bruising of the crops.
This can be done through the use of various methods such as StixFresh which is a labelling sticker that is rounded in a 22mm raduis shape and any other sizes which a client can custom make.
The nifty stickers are impregnated with ionized soduim chloride which has the capacity to irradite fresh fruits which extend shelf life while also maintaining the quality of the fruits.
