Maggie taken by Cancer

I rarely get involved emotionally in a story well at least I try not to.

Maggie Chisala the woman I wrote of died today in the University teaching Hospital where she had been admitted.

Her husband Evaristo told me yesterday that he did not think she would make it and alas he words ring true for at 04: 35 she took her last breath.

Maggie had been bleeding from her wound causing the family to rush her to the Hospital on Sunday.

“She died in the early hours of this morning, the situation was just terrible.” the husband said

Zambian Chapter of the International Community of Women Living with HIV /AIDS Chairperson Clementine Mumba said she is saddened by the news.

“We are disappointed because this case started in 2009 and that is a long time.” Ms Mumba said adding that Ms Chisalas immunity was already compromised because of her HIV/AIDS positive status.

“As HIV positive women our bodies are already fragile and this is while we are calling on the government to introduce screening equipment at the ARV Centers to prevent more deaths.”

She further appealed to the Government to assist the family shoulder funeral and travel expenses.

This call is because the couple came from Mansa to Lusaka for Mrs. Chisalas treatment and because the husband had been fired for nursing his wife.

45-year-old Maggie Chisala had suffered from cancer of the colon since 2009 despite seeking treatment she was told that her condition was critical.

For the past years her only relief came from painkillers and the care from her husband, the couple’s children are in Mansa due to financial constraints they have not seen their mother in years.

The help that was rendered by well-wisher came too late and I cannot help but feel for the husband who has to shoulder the burden of raising a family without a mother.

The cost of transporting the body of a mother they children have not seen for years, the grief the pain the torment.

Yes she is in a better place, away from the pain.

Hamba Khale Maggie may the place you are in fill you with great peace.
